Site Coordinates and Elevation:

  • Latitude: 28.30932° North
  • Longitude: 16.49906° West
  • Elevation: 2401.0 Meters

Site Description:

  • Izana observatory (IZO) site, inaugurated in 1916, is a sun calibration site for the master Cimel instruments of AERONET-Spain (AEROSPAIN), AERONET-Europe, and CARSNET (China) networks. IZO is located on the island of Tenerife (The Canary Islands; Spain) at 2400 m asl. The observatory is situated on the top of a mountain plateau located in a pre-national park area protected by the sky law. IZO is normally above a temperature inversion layer, and so, free from local anthropogenic source influences. The sky is usually free of clouds and as a result is extremely clean and suitable for radiation measurements and sun calibrations. IZO is a World Meteorological Organization-Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW) station of global representativeness (five focal areas: greenhouse gases, radiation, aerosols, column ozone, and reactive gases) as well as a WMO Measurement Lead Centre (former Testbed) for Aerosol and Water Vapour Remote Sensing Instruments.
