Clouds and precipitation, aerosols, and radiation were measured as part of the MAGIC project (funded and operated by the US Department of Energy) on repeated transects between Los Angeles and Hawaii by instruments that comprise the AMF2, the Second ARM (Atmospheric Radiation Measurement) Mobile Facility. The Eastern North Pacific Ocean, where the measurements are taken, is important because of the cloud regimes that occur there and the transitions between them, and MAGIC was designed to collect data on this transition to improve its representation in models.
Ernie Lewis of the Environmental Sciences Department at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, NY was the Principal Investigator for the optical depth measurements, and during September and October of 2012 he and Dr. Michael Reynolds of Remote Measurement and Research Corporation of Seattle, WA operated the sunphotomoter on board the Spirit and acquired eighteen (18) measurement series spanning 9 days.
