The synergy between Clarity nodes, compact and low-cost devices for air quality data (PM2.5 and NO2) collection, and AERONET stations, ground-based instruments for measuring high quality aerosol optical properties, has the potential to significantly enhance air quality and satellite data applications. By strategically deploying Clarity nodes alongside AERONET stations, we can unlock a wealth of technical benefits for air quality monitoring, forecasting, and analysis.
The purpose of this pilot study is to deploy Clarity nodes at twenty-two selected AERONET stations for a period of 6-9 months. The two instruments will collect simultaneous measurements of atmospheric aerosols near the surface and in the column. The measured aerosol properties then will be used to understand surface and column relationship, their spatiotemporal variability including the diurnal cycle. In our knowledge, collocated AOD-PM2.5 measurements are rare and very limited studies have focused on such analysis from ground measurements alone. There has been prefoliation of such studies using satellite-derived aerosol products in the last two decades. However, AERONET measurements have potential to outcome limitations of satellite-based datasets. The outcome from this study can lead to development of an PM2.5 surface datasets from AERONET measurements while utilizing advance machine learning algorithms.
