R/V Tangaroa belongs to National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (Wellington, New Zealand). The cruise area in the South Pacific Ocean included area to the north of the Chatham Rise between New Zealand and the Chatham Islands. This voyage titled preSOAP (Southern Ocean Aerosol Processes pilot study) lead by Dr. Cliff Law took place in January-February 2011. The main objective was to look at the influence of marine biogenic gas emissions, especially from coccolithophore blooms, on aerosol physics and chemistry in the marine boundary layer. Thirty-five (35) measurement series spanning 11 days were acquired during the cruise. The main SOAP voyage is planned for 2012. NIWA is a part of the New Zealand SOLAS programme.
Dr. Mike Harvey from National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (Wellington, New Zealand) was Principal Investigator for aerosol optical measurements and operated a sunphotometer onboard assisted by Dr. John McGregor.
