R/V Tangaroa (http://www.niwa.co.nz/our-science/vessels/tangaroa) belongs to National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (Wellington, New Zealand). The cruise area in the South Pacific Ocean sub-tropical front was on the Chatham Rise between New Zealand and the Chatham Islands. This voyage titled SOAP (Southern Ocean Aerosol Processes) lead by Dr. Cliff Law took place in February-March 2012. The main objective was to look at the influence of marine biota (especially coccolithophore blooms) on ocean atmosphere gradients and drivers of CO2 uptake, DMS and other volatile gas emissions and associated aerosol physics and chemistry in the marine boundary layer. This New Zealand led project is endorsed by the IGBP SOLAS programme http://www.solas-int.org/science/researchendorsements/resendprojects/endorsedprojects.html#soap. Forty-three (43) measurement series spanning fifteen (15) days were acquired during the cruise.
Dr. Mike Harvey from National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (Wellington, New Zealand) was Principal Investigator for aerosol optical measurements and operated a sunphotometer onboard assisted by Dr. John McGregor.
