The sunphotometer is located on a terrace of EMA (Egyptian Meteorological Authority) building at Cairo. This is a strategic station to monitor dust intrusions from the Sahara, as well as urban pollution aerosols. Cairo resides at the center of the largest metropolitan area in Africa and is the eleventh-largest megacity in the world. This is a project financed by the Spanish Agency of International Cooperation for Development (http://www.aeci.es/) through the Atmospheric Research and Environment Program of the World Meteorological Organization (www.wmo.int). This station is part of the Observational program of the WMO Sand and Dust Storm Warning Advisory and Assessment System Regional Center for Northern Africa, Middle East and Europe (http://sds-was.aemet.es/). Data transmission and processing, as well quality assurance, are performed through AERONET-Spain (AEROSPAIN) central facility.
