Site Coordinates and Elevation:

  • Latitude: 51.89241° North
  • Longitude: 8.49376° West
  • Elevation: 40.0 Meters

Site Description:

  • The Cimel Photometer (Model: 318N EDPS9 – dual polarization) is mounted on a reinforced tripod with a steel base-plate on the southernmost part of the roof (5th floor) of the Kane Building at University College Cork, Ireland. A radio transceiver is used to transmit the data to a computer on the North side of the building. The Kane Building is situated in Cork City and is approximately 220 km from Dublin, 577 km from London, and 126 km from Mace Head (NUI Galway). The main aerosol source for this station is marine originating from the Atlantic Ocean. Forest fire smoke from North America is a common (annual) source of aerosol over Ireland (~4263 km). Volcanic aerosol originating from Iceland is an important nearby aerosol source (~1574 km). Saharan dust is less common over Ireland.
