Description:

- El Alto station (16°30'35.9"S 68°11'54.9"W) is located in El Alto city in the western part of Bolivia on the Altiplano highlands with an elevation of 4050m a.s.l. being the highest city in the world. El Alto city is adjacent to La Paz city and almost two millions of inhabitants are living in La Paz metropolis (El Alto and La Paz cities). Geographically the station is surrounded by two mountain ranges, Cordillera Real and Cordillera Occidental, and it is located to some 50km from Lake Titicaca (Northwest) and about 80km from the Amazon Basin (East) which is behind of the Cordillera Real. The climate is semi-arid with and average annual precipitation of 620mm which almost 50% occurs during summer. The instrument is setup at four meters a.g.l in a building in the middle of the El Alto airport. As the station is in el Altiplano, dust is an important source of natural aerosol in the course mode: besides, as the station is in a city it is also affected by anthropogenic aerosols produced by the incomplete combustion of fossil fuel. It is important to highlight that seasonally a considerable amount of anthropogenic aerosol coming from lowlands, in biomass burning activities, increase the aerosol loading in the fine mode.
