Site Description:

  • This instrument is located at Kluane Lake Research Station part of the Arctic Institute of America (AINA) in Silver City, Yukon. Located on the continental foothills of the St. Elias Mountains this high latitude environment is also habitually arid with an average of 275 mm or precipitation a year. Since the early 1970s academic research on mineral dust emissions have been recorded from the proglacial system draining the St. Elias Range that has has no intensified since a dramatic shift in meltwater discharge from this system to another valley. Founded in 1961 the station serves as an important longterm base for a range of scientific endeavors as it is situated within a strong gradient of environmental attributes as a function of its location. The research station is situated on the traditional lands of the Kluane First Nations and Champagne and Aishihik First Nations, and is in close proximity to the Kluane National Park and Reserve, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Silver City is the location of the research station, Icefields Discovery, and several bed and breakfast hotel, situated on the southern shoreline of Kluane Lake, 220 km northwest of the city of Whitehorse
