NASA Ames is surrounded by surburban development, with downtown San Jose roughly 15 miles Southeast, and San Francisco roughly 35 miles Northwest. The Santa Cruz mountain coastal range, starting roughly 10 miles west, separates this region from the Pacific Ocean.
