Site Description:

  • The Napoli-CeSMA AERONET sun-photometer is located one kilometer far from the Mediterranean Sea. The system is installed above the building of the CeSMA University of Naples Federico II, in Naples city. The measurement area represents an ideal site for a long-term assessment of the various types of aerosol produced by different sources in the center of the Mediterranean basin, being influenced from marine aerosol of the near Mediterranean sea, anthropogenic aerosol produced by the urban and industrial areas of Naples and the European region at North, local and long-range transported biomass burning aerosol, and mineral dust transported from the Southern Sahara desert region. A second AERONET sun-photometer is used during the calibration phase of the first or during measurement campaigns.
