Site Coordinates and Elevation:

  • Latitude: 53.13540° South
  • Longitude: 70.88450° West
  • Elevation: 25.0 Meters

Site Description:

  • The instrument is installed on the roof platform of the main building of University de Magallanes (UMAG). Punta Arenas is located in Southern Chile, in close vicinity to the Strait of Magellan as well as to the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean. The region of Punta Arenas is characterized by a marine dominated moderate climate. The middle and upper troposphere can be considered to be very clean. Strong, mainly westerly winds, occurring frequently in the lower troposphere and planetary boundary layer, can however lead to the dispersion of local aerosol (such as soil dust or plant material) into the lowest 1000 m of the atmosphere. Punta Arenas is already running a permanent lidar station (http://data.savernet-satreps.org/) and is collaborative partner in the project Dynamics, Aerosol, Cloud And Precipitation Observations in the Pristine Environment of the Southern Ocean (DACAPO-PESO http://dacapo.tropos.de) which is scheduled to take place from October 2018 to end of 2019.
