Site Coordinates and Elevation:

  • Latitude: 76.51450° North
  • Longitude: 68.74310° West
  • Elevation: 225.0 Meters

Site Description:

  • Thule Air Base, known as Pituffik in Greenlandic, is located in a small rectangular shaped West-to-East running valley surrounded by the sea (North Star Bay) to the West, by hills to the North and South (North- and South Mountain) and the Inland Icesheet to the East. The Aeronet instrument is located on the roof of building 1971 (B1971) located on the South Mountain (225m) with a very good horizon. This building also serves as the primary building for the NDACC station operated by the Danish Meteorological Institute. The air is generally very clean, the only nearby pollution source is in fact the Air Base itself (fuel based electricity generation, car and aircraft exhausts).
