2023

  • 26 July 2023 - AERONET Ocean Color Data Upgrade

The AERONET-OC data (Normalized Water Leaving Radiance) procedure of raising from Level 1.5 to Level 2.0 changed starting on July 2023. Previously expert-based quality control procedure (Zibordi et al. 2021) was applied to the qualified data (with final calibration and corresponding Level 2 AOD). Now the automated quality control procedure (Zibordi et al. 2022) is applied to all data not formerly quality controlled by March 2022 and upcoming data.

    Zibordi, G., Holben, B. N., Talone, M., D'Alimonte, D., Slutsker, I., Giles, D. M., & Sorokin, M. G. (2021). Advances in the ocean color component of the aerosol robotic network (AERONET-OC). Journal of Atmospheric and Oceanic Technology, 38(4), 725-746.

Zibordi, G., D'Alimonte, D., & Kajiyama, T. (2022). Automated Quality Control of AERONET-OC LWN Data. Journal of Atmospheric and Oceanic Technology, 39(12), 1961-1972.

    • V3 Level 2.0 (Quality Assured) Spectral Deconvolution Algorithm (SDA) retrieval products (fine mode AOD , coarse mode AOD, and fine mode fraction of AOD) database is now available.

    • V3 web service now includes a link to download sky scan measurements such as almucantar, hybrid, and principal plane scenarios.

    • V3 Level 1.5 and Level 2.0 Almucantar inversion database available 11 January 2018.

    • Version 2 Level 2.0 AOD, SDA, and Inversion databases are expected to be maintained concurrently for 1 year.

2015

  • 2 October 2015 - CE318-T Sun-Sky-Lunar spectral photometer is accepted for AERONET use. Extensive testing of the new model Cimel photometer has been completed and is now fully integrated into the AERONET network.

The new model is essentially a new control box that has all the functionality of the current CE318 photometers.  It is fully compatible with the existing robots and the latest Version 5 sensor heads (with an upgrade kit).  We note the following characteristics:

--Improved solar tracking accuracy and operational range
--Micro-stepping: faster and smoother robot response
--Enhanced measurement scenarios yet data sets are compatible with historic database
--Onboard data storage prevents data loss GPS time and location stamped data
--Communication via serial, USB, cellular and DCS satellite
    --Lunar measurements

AERONET will no longer accept previous models as new entries into the network. All current models used in the field will continue to be supported but replacement of the analog models (Version 4) produced before 2004 is encouraged.

  • 1 October 2015 - Version 3 processing and evaluation begins October 1. The Version 3 processing is now officially in evaluation mode that includes a beta version of the AOD and inversion products. We expect a final release in early 2016. The initial beta release is available via the AERONET web service. These Version 3 beta data products are for evalution and not for publication.
